His entire broadcasting career has been in his home town of Victoria. Beginning in the late 1960s, he worked his way up at CKDA Radio to become the featured morning man, before moving in the late '70s to join CHEK.  | 12/26/17 - Dick Orkin, creator of the popular serial spoof Chickenman and voice of some of the funniest and most memorable commercials, has died at age 84. Chickenman was heard at various times in the late 1960s and early '70s on CKLG, CJOR and CFUN Vancouver, KPUG Bellingham, KJR Seattle and KTAC Tacoma. | 12/22/17 - The FCC has proposed a $13.4 million fine on TV-station owner Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. for not identifying paid programming as advertising. The Commission said spots for the Huntsman Cancer Foundation which weren't properly identified as ads, had aired more than 1,700 times in 2016 across 64 Sinclair-owned TV stations and 13 other stations not owned by the company.  | 12/22/17 - The Seattle Seahawks and Bonneville News-Talk KIRO-FM 97.3 and Sports 710 ESPN KIRO AM Seattle have inked a multi-year extension of their radio deal.  | 12/21/17 - Veteran Los Angeles broadcaster Cliff Winston, who had early roots in Seattle radio, died Tuesday. He was an on-air host and later PD at KJLH-FM 102.3 Los Angeles for many years. Winston received his Bachelors degree in communications from the University of Washington and worked at KYAC Seattle. He also hosted shows in St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit and Houston, but is best known for his two-decade run at KJLH. KJLH News |
 | 12/21/17 - Former CFMS-FM 100.3 and CFAX AM 1070 Victoria host Len Rowcliffe has died in Vancouver at age 88 after suffering from several conditions, including prostate cancer and Alzheimer's disease. The Montreal native worked at CFMS during the 1980s and then hosted the nostalgia music program Sentimental Journey weeknights and a call-in garden show on Sunday mornings on CFAX during the 1990s.  | 12/21/17 - Northwest broadcast legend Jim French passed away Wednesday at age 89. He was a fixture for many years at Seattle radio stations KING, KIRO and KVI. Perhaps his greatest legacy will be the Radio Theatre plays he wrote for more than 30 years. French's Imagination Theatre aired on KIXI Seattle for nearly 17 years.  | 12/20/17 - Following the FCCs approval of its necessary divestments Monday, iHeartMedia has begun operating the remainder of the stations it acquired from Entercom. iHeart dropped the former formats on the two Washington stations last week in order to retain the intellectual property. KUBEs format is now housed on 93.3 KPWK-HD2 Seattle, while the Alternative format has relaunched on 96.5 KJAQ-HD2.  | 12/20/17 - TV viewers north of the border will continue to be able to watch US ads during the Super Bowl without having to resort to antennas to get the games over the air from Seattle. The Federal Court of Appeal has dismissed Bell Canada and the NFL's appeal over a regulatory decision to ban substituting the ads on cable with Canadian ones during the big game. The CRTC announced the ban on simultaneous substitution of Canadian advertising over American broadcasts in 2015, but it took effect during the 2017 game. Bell asked the CRTC to re-consider its decision in August, claiming its advertising revenues dropped by $11 million and it lost 40 per cent of its audience for the game.  | 12/14/17 - British Columbia Premier John Horgan harshly criticizes CBC after the Corporation fired popular legislative reporter Richard Zussman after he co-wrote a book about B.C. politics with Postmedia reporter Rob Shaw. The book about the fall of Liberal government leader Christy Clark and rise of Horgans NDP is set to be published in the spring. CBC spokesman Chuck Thompson said an investigation showed Zussman violated CBCs code of conduct, conflict-of-interest rules and the collective agreement with the Canadian Media Guild union.  | 12/14/17 - Kenny Harris, who passed away December 10th in his native UK, and who worked in radio in Calgary and at CKNW AM 980 Vancouver, was also considered one of Bermuda's veteran broadcasters. His life was the subject of a Bermuda Government Treasures television program produced in 2009. Liberal premier Christy Clark and the rise of the NDP under John Horgan. His case will soon be in the hands of an arbitrator. | 12/12/17 - iHeartMedia has replaced the formats of Alternative Alt 102.9 KFNY Centralia, and Urban KUBE 104.9 KTDD Eatonville with a pair of filler music formats from what the company used to call its Premium Choice in-house networks. KFNY is now running Smooth Jazz branded as The South Sounds Smooth Jazz Station, while KTDD is running Christian CHR branded as Positive Hit Music. | 12/11/17 - Former CKNW AM 980 Vancouver Production Director Kenny Harris died yesterday, December 10, in Brandon, England. He was 90. He was Production Director from 1977 through the early 1980s and also worked in radio in Calgary in the early '70s and in Bermuda, both before coming to Canada around 1970 and after leaving CKNW. Harris was a popular jazz drummer, known in the British music industry as 'Mr. Brushes'. He was a music recording engineer and producer for many years, and owned the Kneptune record label and publishing company. He continued to keep in touch with a number of people associated with the industry in Vancouver. |

 | 12/11/17 - CBC Radio One Vancouver has announced that Stephen Quinn will be the new host of the morning show The Early Edition, replacing Rick Cluff, who retires December 22.  | 12/06/17 - Longtime KOMO-TV Seattle sports anchor Bruce King, who retired in 1999 after 31 years with the station, has died at age 83. He became KOMO's Sports Director in 1968 and stayed until 1980, when he was hired to fill the same role at WABC-TV New York. He was back at KOMO-TV the following year.  | 12/03/17 - A Celebration of Life has been announced for former BCTV (now Global) Vice-President of Programming Lloyd Colthorp who died November 19 at age 87 after a long struggle with COPD. Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. announced plans in May to acquire Tribune Media's 42 TV stations as well as cable network WGN America, in a $3.9 billion deal extending its reach to 72 percent of U.S. households.   | 11/14/17 - A further explanation why KUOW-FM 94.9 and KEXP-FM 90.3 Seattle were knocked off the airwaves Monday is because of a power outage on Capitol Hill. KUOWs Transfer Switch failed to switch over to emergency power and KEXP is not on the site generator. Engineers suspect that what was thought to be lightning was the flash of transformers exploding. He was the 13th person hired at British Columbia Institute of Technology to develop and teach Broadcast Technology.  | 08/17/17 - Global News listened to three different Canadian country-music radio stations for 12 hours and tallied the number of songs by male artists, female artists and mixed groups. The stations are based in Woodstock and Oshawa, Ontario and JRfm CJJR-FM 93.7 Vancouver. JRfm played 151 male songs, 11 mixed-gender group songs and only 14 female songs. The ratio was similar in all three markets. Industry insiders and country music radio workers, for the most part, agree that its a phenomenon dictated by consumer demand. In FCC filings, critics say the deal will give the company unprecedented power to politicize local TV news, raise pay TV and ad rates, slow the growth of wireless broadband, and determine what new broadcast technologies can succeed. Sinclair acquired KOMO as part of a $373 million deal for 20 stations in 2013. The company was used to operating in smaller markets, making KOMO a new kind of challenge, a "big station with an aggressive, accomplished newsroom". He was well-known for his Woodward's Department Store and Food Floor ads, which he produced from 1962-87. | 07/17/17 - A Tribune Media shareholder has filed a lawsuit in an attempt to block a proposed $3.9 billion acquisition of the company by Sinclair Broadcast Group. Sean McEntire is pursuing a class-action suit in federal court in Chicago accusing Tribune Media of not giving the whole picture prior to the merger. Specifically, he said that Tribune Media has failed to provide all relevant financial projections as well as how much other bidders offered for Tribune Media. In the late 1960s as a hotline host at CKNW, Webster had 186,000 daily listeners and a salary of $100,000. | 05/09/17 - The Sinclair Broadcast Group acquisition of Tribune Media will mean it will own two major Seattle TV stations, ABC affiliate KOMO-TV and Fox affiliate KPCQ-TV. However, Sinclair also owns Univision affiliate KUNS-TV and Tribune also owns JOEtv KZJO-TV. | 05/08/17 - Sinclair Broadcast Group is buying Tribune Media for $3.9 Billion plus assumption of about $2.7 billion in debt. The deal, originally reported by Reuters, values Tribune at $43.50 per share, about a 26% premium over the price of Tribune stock the day before Sinclair's interest in the company was reported on February 28th. Sinclair will get 42 TV stations and other holdings, and also has radio interests in Seattle.  | 05/08/17 - J. Michael Kenyon, one of Seattles legendary sportswriters and a longtime local wrestling historian, M.C. and promoter, died April 26 at age 73. Kenyon, who was born Michael Glover and grew up in the Lake City neighborhood of Seattle, suffered from congestive heart failure. In 1980, Kenyon was the citys second sports talk show host on KVI AM 570. He's been a guest panelist on the show a few times since the fall of 2015, but just took on the hosting reins with show tapings a couple of weeks ago in Vermont. Says You! is in its 21st season and recently passed the 500-episode mark. The original host/writer/producer was the shows creator, Richard Sher, who passed away in February 2015. | 04/27/17 - Global BC and its over-the-air sister stations in Calgary and Edmonton will receive an additional $10 million in funding as a result of an announcement by the company that it will shut down its local community cable news operations in Vancouver and the two Alberta cities. The closures will take place August 15th and will affect about 70 positions in the three cities. Meanwhile, Shaw TV will continue to develop and air local content in Victoria, Nanaimo, Kelowna, and other Canadian communities. The shifting media landscape and consumer habits prompted the CRTC last year to give television providers like Shaw the flexibility to redistribute funds to over-the-air television stations to support production of local news. | 04/25/17 - Newcap Radio has announced it will sell CISL AM 650 Vancouver to Rogers Media for an undisclosed amount. The purchase of CISL gives Rogers a home for the NHLs Vancouver Canucks. Rogers had announced in March that it will takeover the radio broadcasts of the franchise next year from Bell Media Sports TSN 1040 CKST. The purchase gives Rogers a fourth station in Vancouver joining News 1130 CKWX, Jack CJAX-FM 96.9 and CHR Kiss Radio CKKS-FM 104.9. The deal is subject to CRTC approval. | 04/09/17 - An obituary has been published for Big Daddy Dave McCormick, who passed away in Vancouver March 29 at age 80. He was a legendary veteran broadcaster in Vancouver, with stops in Fresno, Seattle and San Bernardino. After returning from the US in 1972, Big Daddy created "Discumentary", an award-winning daily one-hour music history anthology of rock and roll, which was later syndicated across North America and Australia. In 1986 he was the first to be hired by the brand new JR Country (CJJR-FM) Vancouver and wrote, edited and hosted "Countrymentary". He was named BC Broadcaster of the Year, BC Country Music Association On Air Personality of the Year (four times), inductee to the BC Country Music Association Hall of Fame, and BC Entertainment Hall of Fame (Star Walk). The Foundation says the donation is the largest by a private citizen to a single medical facility in Canadian history. It will help build the Jim Pattison Medical Centre, an 18-acre health campus, which will include the new St. Paul's Hospital, to be constructed near Main Street and Terminal Avenue in East Vancouver. He called himself John Cummings on air and worked in a number of markets, including Prince Rupert, Penticton, Edmonton and Victoria. He was one of the first hires and also produced Across the Trax at CJJR-FM Vancouver when it signed on in 1986, and wrote and recorded over 25 shows on the Beatles at CISL. Cumming retired from radio in 1991 and became a special education assistant at the Richmond School Board, where he retired eight years ago. There was no published obituary. |

 | 03/13/17 - Former CBC Vancouver engineering staffer Alan Martin passed away in Ottawa February 19 at age 85. His career with CBC began in Halifax in 1956. In 1962 he transferred to Edmonton as a Supervising Technician, moving to Montreal in 1966 as Technical Supervisor. In 1967 he became part of the Northern Service Region in Ottawa and went from there in 1977 to spend two years in the Bahamas overseeing a new Television plant installation. In 1979 he became part of the CBC Engineering Department in Vancouver where he remained until his retirement in 1987. A celebration of life will be held in Gatineau, QC on April 15. | 03/11/17 - Vancouver Whitecaps FC has announced that TSN Radio Vancouver will continue to be home to the Caps for the next three seasons. All 34 matches will be carried on either TSN 1040 or TSN 1410. Peter Schaad, who was released from his position at TSN Radio in January, returns to provide play-by-play for Whitecaps FC matches on TSN Radio when not calling matches on the TSN TV broadcast. Schaad enters his seventh MLS season on the mic, and has been providing Whitecaps FC commentary since 2002. | 02/02/17 - Entercom Communications Corp. and CBS Corporation today announced that the companies have entered into an agreement by which Entercom will combine with CBS Radio in a tax-free merger. The transaction will create a nationwide footprint of 244 stations, including 23 of the top 25 U.S. markets. The company expects to make approximately 15 divestitures in Los Angeles, Boston, Sacramento, San Francisco and Seattle, where the combined entity will own more stations than the FCC allows. In Seattle, Entercom has four FM Stations and CBS has three FM stations and an AM. | 01/30/17 - Former CBC Vancouver Television staffer Tony Zeffertt passed away January 17 at age 83. He joined CBC in 1956, eventually doing mike boom, camera, video operation and video mixing at Studio 41, 42 and 49 in the studios at 1200 West Georgia Street, as well as in both mobile units. Celsie had been in radio since the late 1960s and was the original morning host/PD at Vancouver market CISL AM 650 during the 1980s before moving to Bohn & Associates (now SparkNet) in 1990 as a consultant then V.P. Consulting. During the last couple of years he was a consultant with Rawlco and its Saskatchewan stations. There will be no service per his request. SparkNet was the creator of the Jack FM brand. |

| 01/24/17 - Stage, film, radio and television icon Joy Coghill Thorne died January 20 at age 90 at the palliative care unit of St. Pauls Hospital in Vancouver, after suffering massive heart failure. Besides her ongoing role in CBCs drama series DaVincis Inquest, she is probably best known for her portrayal of Margaret Ma Murray, B.C.s first female newspaper publisher, in the 1983 CBC drama Ma! She appeared in numerous CBC television productions and radio plays. Her extensive career led to lifetime achievement awards by UBCP/ACTRA in 2016 and the City of Vancouver in 2015, as well as being inducted as a member of the Order of Canada in 1991 and a recipient of the Governor Generals Award for the Performing Arts in 2002. Seattle-based indie rock band Car Seat Headrest was the first to perform under the lights. A system of three Microsoft Kinects tracks the musicians' movements and changes the array of tennis ball-sized lights accordingly.  | 01/02/17 - Frontier Communications has dropped KOMO-TV after being unable to strike an agreement with Sinclair Broadcast Group, which also owns KATU-TV Portland. Sinclair had announced two weeks ago it did not expect to renew its re-transmission consent agreement with Frontier. The company said Frontier subscribers represented less than 3 percent of the total households in Seattle. Frontier mainly serves customers north and east of Seattle, including Bothell, Redmond, Shoreline and Everett. Meanwhile, for much of Sunday, DirecTV dropped KIRO-TV along with other TV stations around the country that are part of Cox Media Group.
